A major Canadian national bank
Designed a BIAN-aligned AWS API & data ecosystem to manage customer agreements across internal domains and a SaaS data master.
Challenge
Customer agreements were spread across legacy systems and manual workflows. Leadership needed a standards-aligned API + data fabric that could absorb an external SaaS master and expose clean, governed contracts to consumer UIs, regulators and downstream domains — under banking-grade security requirements.
Approach
- Authored modelling standards and BIAN alignment so the data model would survive the next reorganization.
- Built conceptual, logical and physical data models for both relational and NoSQL stores.
- Designed business and technical API contracts plus Backends-for-Frontends for the UI layer.
- Specified the AWS landing zone: EKS, EventBridge, Lambda, SNS, DynamoDB, Redis (Valkey), API Gateway, WAF, CloudFront, Route53.
- Documented the consumer-facing API catalog and guided approval through the architecture committee.
Outcome
A production-ready BIAN-aligned ecosystem approved by the bank's architecture governance. The platform consolidated agreement management into a single modern UX, reduced SaaS contract-broker errors, and set the foundation for retirement of legacy agreement silos.
Technology stack
OpenAPI 3, Kafka, EKS, DynamoDB, Redis, API Gateway, WAF, CloudFront, Route53, Okta
Estimated return on investment
Estimates are directional, based on comparable modernization benchmarks. Actual savings depend on starting baseline, scope and execution discipline.
